This year, we at MyHandworkStudio.com are most thankful. First, we are thrilled with the opportunity to reach so many kids who love to craft. It is with great joy that we see, share and hear the voices of so many talented kids.
Also, at our studio in Narberth, PA, we've had the best year working with kids all day long. The photo above is the project Miss Julia, our talented Studio Director, made with the kids during our Thanksgiving Workshop. The look on each child's face as they walked out the door holding their own turkey was priceless!

On Thursday, I took all our great teachers at The Handwork Studio on a field trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. There we saw Gee's Bend, a traveling quilt exhibit about the inhabitants of Gee's Bend in Alabama. It was a touching exhibit about the life and times of these quilters over the last 100 years. Yes, the quilts were beautiful and interesting, but as with all handcrafting, it is the back story that is truly fascinating. Gee's Bend is a rural area where descendants of slaves from Joseph Gee, a plantation owner in the 1800's, have lived and continue to live to this day.

In our house, the perfect weekend for my 13 year old daughter would include a trip to the mall for a mini shopping spree. Yet as we watch the news with fear in our hearts about the future of our economy and snap at our spouses because of the added tension in the house, we need to pull together as a family to find ways of protecting what money we have.

September is National Sewing Month and retailers everywhere are celebrating by offering special sales and classes. Sewing is a wonderful craft and should be celebrated. However, one may question whether it is really important and why should they consider it for their child? Unfortunately, not a lot of research has been done that has measured the actual physical, mental and emotional benefits of doing this kind of crafting. However, one thing has been determined in a consumer report by the Home Sewing Association. In their 2004 Overview of the Sewing Industry by the now defunct HSA, it was found that you increase your chances of machine sewing as an adult if you learn before the age of 10. “Current sewers of all ages are significantly more likely than are lapsed sewers to have learned to sew at a very young age, under the age of ten. Lapsed sewers, on the other hand, more often learned as a teen or adult.” Besides the fact that the likelihood is greater to machine sew if you start young, what are some of the other benefits to your child? Although there is no scientific proof of the benefits, let me share with you my observations in my work as a needle arts educator for the last seven years.

Well, ok so it wasn't quite the dog days of summer when we went to NYC on our fashion field trip. Actually, it was a magnificently beautiful day, however, everywhere we went, there were dogs! Nicole Miller had dogs. Bryant Park obviously had dogs. Mood Fabrics... more dogs. But the day was anything but a dog!
